Boating Courses
Courses in Boating
Mount Brenton Squadron will be offering the Boating Course twice each year beginning
September and January. The Boat Pro Course, which is a prerequisite to
obtaining the Pleasure Craft Operator's Card, will be offered throughout
the year. Other Courses that will be offered at various times depending on level of
interest, are Marine Radio, GPS, Weather, Marine Electronics, Marine Maintenance,
and Advanced Navigation.
Boat Pro
This course, accredited by the Canadian Coast Guard (CCG), was developed to meet
the Government Regulations for operator competency. It contains all the
information needed to obtain a Pleasure Craft Operator Card. The Boat Pro
course provides a great introduction to boating safety and navigation.
Each course is held over three evenings, culminating in a CCG approved
examination. Courses are held at Fuller Lake Arena, at Youbou, and other
locations.
The Boating Course
This course contains expanded, detailed boating safety information as well
as developing the skills of plotting and navigation. It is held twice a
year, September through November and January through March. Successful completion
of the examinations offered at the end of the course will provide the
student with the Pleasure Craft Operator Card and the opportunity to become
a member of CPS. The course is usually held two evenings a week for a
period of 9 weeks at Ladysmith Senior Secondary. A day cruise is also
part of the course to provide students with a chance to practice their
knowledge of boating safety and navigation. A demonstration on the use of flares
and fire fighting equipment is usually held at Transfer Beach as part of the Course.
Advanced Courses
Advanced courses are restricted to CPS-ECP members.
The Boating Course is a prerequisite for the Piloting Course. Piloting provides
the theoretical knowledge to be able to handle a boat in rough weather
and to deal with emergency situations.
Piloting is a prerequisite for the Advanced Piloting Course. This course develops
principles of coastal navigation which will enable you to know where you
are at all times. Your boat's position can be determined by using landmarks
and aids to navigation, allowing for current and leeway.
The Advanced Piloting Course is a prerequisite for the Celestial Navigation
Course. This course applies the sciences of cartography and astronomy
to set a course and determine a position at sea.
Elective Courses
These courses are open to both CPS members and non-members. VHF Radio Course
is held at least once or twice a year. Other Elective Courses are held
when there is a sufficient level of interest shown.
